What is an AI chatbot?
A chatbot is a model you talk to. It knows what is in the conversation and what it learned in training, and it replies with text.
What is an AI personal assistant?
An assistant is that same conversation connected to your own records — tasks, calendar, notes, reminders — with permission to read them and change them.
The words get used loosely. Products call themselves assistants when they only answer. The label is not the test. Three questions are.
How do you tell the difference?
Ask these three questions about any product. Each one is a yes or a no.
- Can it see your data? Not what you paste in. What is already in your calendar, task list, and notes, without you opening them first. If you have to describe your week first, it cannot see it.
- Can it write a change back? You say “move the dentist to Thursday.” Does the event move? Or do you get a nicely worded suggestion to move it yourself? Advice is not a write.
- Does the change land where you will look tomorrow?A task created inside a chat window is still in the chat window. It counts only if it shows up on the day, or as a reminder that fires.
Three yeses and you have an assistant. One or two and you have a chatbot with a plug-in. Zero and you have a chatbot, which may be exactly what you want.
What is a chatbot better at?
A lot. A chatbot is not losing here. It is doing a different job.
- Research. Explaining a topic, comparing options, summarizing something long.
- Writing. Drafts, rewrites, tone changes, a first version of anything.
- Breadth. Code, recipes, tax questions, a wedding toast. Any subject.
- Thinking out loud. Brainstorming, pushing back on an idea, asking the question you had not thought to ask.
None of that needs your calendar. When the answer is the product, use a chatbot.
What is an assistant for?
The moments when the answer is not the product. The change is. “Remind me to call the plumber Friday.” “Push the review to next week.” “What did I say I would send Priya?” Each of those is a small write to a record you already keep. An assistant makes the write. A chatbot tells you how.
Chatbot vs assistant, side by side
| Question | Chatbot | Personal assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Sees your task list | Only what you paste | Reads it as it is now |
| Sees your calendar | Only what you paste | Reads events and free time |
| Remembers what you told it last week | Depends on the product | Part of the job |
| “I said I would call her Thursday” | Drafts what to say | Sets the reminder |
| “Move the meeting” | Explains how | Moves it |
| Where the result ends up | In the chat | In the list, on the day |
| Best for | Questions, drafts, ideas | Commitments and plans you keep |
Is a chatbot ever a personal assistant?
Sometimes. Whether ChatGPT counts depends on which of the three tests it passes for your data, not on the name. That row-by-row answer is on the compare page.
